Happy Sunday everyone!
My next animal in my hooked rug.
A tribute to Star the horse.
There are pictures of me on a different horse
when I was just three years old.
Star was owned by my uncle,
but she was boarded at my gramma B's farm.
She was so gentle.
So I was able to ride her all of the time.
I would ride her around the front field
bareback with no saddle or bridle.
Since she was a tall horse,
I would wait until she went to the feed trough,
climb on that and get on her back that way.
If grampa B saw me, he would yell out the back
farmhouse door to get off that horse before
I broke my neck.
Being a teenage rebel,
I would comply just until he went back inside,
then I was back on her.
Now her mate Lightning on the other hand
was one horse I stayed away from.
Never even wanted to pet him.
He was a mean stallion...not to be trusted.
Star was a black beauty with a white star
on her forehead.
However I hooked her in a blue tweed wool.
You may have noticed I drew circles above my horse.
After hooking a few, did not like the look.
Opted for random colors.
Were you a young rebel like I was riding Star?
Star Blessings To All!
Janice
I have loved horses my whole life. As a young child, I would beg for my parents to take me to this place that had Shetland ponies and you paid for someone to lead you around. It didn’t happen often but then at age 9 I started taking horse back riding lessons and would spend an entire day at the barn just petting and brushing horses after my lesson. I loved the smell of a barn with the hay and garbage cans full of sweet feed . Your new hooked rug is going to be so cute and it will be a tribute to beautiful Star who let you ride her bareback and took such good care of you every time you got on. Horses bond with people and when treated kindly will respond in kind.
ReplyDeleteMe too! I would draw lots of horses and my favorite book was Misty of Chincoteaque Island. Wanted to have one of those ponies or a Morgan horse. Never had either, but enjoyed riding Star and many others! So glad you had the opportunity to ride as well. Janice
DeleteJanice, I to loved Misty of Chincoteaque too!! Because I was living in Virginia, My parents took me to Chincoteague island one summer for a few days. I was in heaven!

DeleteBefore I had my own horse I would go into the pasture down the road and jump on the back of a horse bareback and no bridle either. Would just hold onto the mane. Also knew a man who owned a Palomino Stallion and once went in his back yard, climbed the paddock fencing and got on his back. The stallion didn't think much of that and kicked me off. Learned my lesson with him because I skinned up my left shin rather badly. But then later saved money babysitting and got my own horse.
ReplyDeleteSounds similar to my story. Palominos are beautiful, but was always told NEVER to trust a stallion. How nice you were able to purchase your own horse and I know you had many wonderful times riding. Janice
Deletehow wonderful you are hooking memories.
ReplyDeleteCathy
Yep and loving going it! Janice
DeleteI loved horses very much when I was young. I am glad you rode Star. What a good memory of a good horse.
ReplyDeleteYes it was one of many good memories I must say! Janice
DeleteThe only horse I rode bare back was when I was walking along the road from school and it started to rain and my uncle picked me up and we both rode home bare back on a white mare. I held on the mane.
ReplyDeleteWhen my kids were young we got to board a Shetland peony at our farm. His name was Lightning also, he had bad feet. He belonged to the Premier of our province, Hon Louis Robichaud. He was very gentle and the kids loved to on him.
Hooking memories is the best.
HUugs, Julia
How cool to have boarded the premiers pony. What an honor! Janice
DeleteOops,I thought that I had deleted the capital "U". Just make it a special hug, lol...

Hugs back to you! Janice
DeleteI enjoyed reading your memories today. My aunt Sally had a horse named Shadow. I showed her at the fair. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love the hooking memory.

How nice to show a horse! Janice
DeleteHorses always scared me although I did do trail rides when younger. My neighbor has a rescued race horse and he's super friendly but not sure how he is to ride. I've never seen them ride him. I can't say I did any crazy rebel stuff as a kiddo. Just boring I guess! You're rug is so sweet with your memories there to enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI did trail rides when I was older when my gramma sold the farm. Those horses had some issues though. Janice
DeleteWorking full time, making things for the shop, working the shop...and you have found time to hook? You must not sleep. The rug is looking good.
ReplyDeleteYep call me crazy! LOL Janice
DeleteI had a pony named Star. He was foundered, stubborn, barn sour and his trot was faster than his gallop except when we were trying to catch him - then he flew at a gallop. Even so, I cried when he got sold when his larger replacement was bought.
ReplyDeleteHow sad you had to sell him, but am sure you had some wonderful memories. Janice
DeleteLove your stories of Star. I had a horse as a teenager, black with a white blaze on her face. Your rug is looking good. Look forward to seeing the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteSeems like many of my blogging friends have some horse stories. So nice to hear about them. More animals will be featured in my rug. Stay tuned. Janice
DeleteI like your rug and story. I can't wait to see it complete.
ReplyDeleteMe too. I hit a road block and stopped working on it again. Janice
DeleteHugs
ReplyDeleteHugs back. Janice
DeleteI love the rug but I love the story even more, Janice.
ReplyDeleteHow fun to have owned a wild horse. I always wanted a wild pony. Janice
ReplyDeleteThanks Jeanie! Janice
