Friday Finishes

I finally finished it.

I started this pattern on June 6, 2024.
Finished December 1, 2024.
I simply hated this pattern.
I really wanted to do the wreaths on each side.
The colors in the chart were so close in value
that it was very hard to read...
it was impossible for me to stitch them.
They were also a satin stitch.
I even tried re-doing on graph paper
with my colored pencils and just gave up.
The symbols were also so very hard to read.
Dont think I will ever purchase another pattern
from this designer.
***UPDATE***
Unfortunately I did purchase another
pattern from this designer.
Same issue with the symbols. UGH
Not sure when I will start that one...
if I even do.

I did keep the ghosted flowers.

I also changed the border a bit.
Opted for a brown and blue
instead of the white and blue.

I added the steeple and cross at the top.
Omitted the pond at the bottom
with the person in a rowboat.
Wanted this to look like a church,
which if you remember me saying before
that I thought it was at first.
Oh how wrong I was.

The wreath on the left now became lily of the valley
which were in my moms wedding bouquet.
The wreath on the left became a bowl of fruit.
My dad loved his fruit.
The only thing I did wrong was I should have moved
the flower on the left down more.
Oh well.

I pushed myself to get this completed,
so I could get it framed in time
for our family Christmas party.

My mom loved it.
So did my sister.

It fit perfectly here on my heritage wall.
Now on to the next one which will be
a tribute to my grandmothers,
which I have already started.

My next finish is Button Up by Prairie Schooler.

I opted to stitch this in blues instead of the red.
I did do a bit of red in each square though.

I should have stitched this with 2 strands,
but again oh well.
When I thought about it...did not want to frog
all that I had already done.

Each square except for the first
and last one had gold in it...so I decided
for the last square to add gold into
the scarf and glove of the boy.
Also the pom on his hat.
Cannot wait to fully finish this now.

I loved stitching this. Was kind of sad
that I finished it....but onto the next project.

In other news,
The US Coast Guard cutter
Bristol Bay is now docked each evening
in the town just down the road from us.
There was a freighter that was stuck in the ice.
This cutter got the freighter moving again.
The Canadian Coast Guard Cape Dundas
is now docked where Lake Huron meets
our St Clair River towards the North.
We are at the South end.
They tag team to assist freighters who
get stuck in the ice.
They will be here now until the ice is gone.

Shanty town is back in business.
(as we call it)
All of the ice fisherman are out
on the ice in the lake near us
with their portable sheds
which are called shanties.
They will stay out their for hours
trying to catch fish.
Some even have portable heaters in them.
You wont catch me out on the ice...
nope...nevermore.
I did once on the Southern part of the
lake and it was scary for me.
We now live near the Northern part....
yet I will never go out on it again.
When it really gets frozen they
snowmobile on it...which will be soon
as our temps are going to be in the single digits
for day time highs I hear and negative at night.
BRRR

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend.
Stay warm if you are in the cold area.
Those in the sun...bring some of the warmth
back up please.
At least the days are getting longer now.

Friday Blessings To All!
Janice

  1. Good morning, I love seeing your needlework-I could never do this form of stitching sorry for the hassle of a very poor pattern.
when we lived on the border of Wisconsin and Illinois we saw a lot of ice fisherman on the lakes-no thank you not for me either.
take care today is our last warm day for awhile then back to bitter cold-which looks like the east coast will be getting too

  2. Great finishes. Good for you.
I would have given up on the sampler long ago. It is so hard to stitch when the linen and floss colors are so close in value.
I absolutely LOVE your Prairie Schooler stitch. Changing from reds to blues was genius!!! So sweet.
We are cold and got a few more inches of snow yesterday. Now they are saying rain tomorrow. Oh will it be a mess ;-(
When I was young my dad had a shanty for ice fishing on Lake Erie. I don't think the lake ever freezes that much anymore to allow for that. Scary indeed...even as far north as you are.
Only 61 days until spring and the longer evenings are so welcome.

  3. When I first started reading this post I was going to comment, "Janice, you are so good at this -- just change the colors, dump the wreaths and add your own creativity to it! You've got this!" And then I read more and -- that's exactly what you did! And it is lovely. But boy, I know what you mean about a bad pattern. I have an unfinished fair isle sweater (maybe; might have pitched it) that had pattern-reading issues. The freighters sound lovely. We're headed for the vortex or whatever they are calling next week's cold.

  4. It really turned out great, but what a hassle you went through. I'm impressed with how you change these to fit what you want. When I used to stitch, I followed the pattern and never even thought to change it up!
We have a shanty town not far from us on the Grand River where there are so many ice fishermen. You wouldn't catch me out there either!

  5. My husband was in the Coast Guard for 10 years where he retired out ( 10 years in Navy before that) He was on an icebreaker in the Arctic.
The first time I ever walked out on a frozen lake was an alpine lake about 8,000 elevation. I was scared. Crossed that off my bucket list.

    You do such good work.

  6. Your stitchery is lovely. I hope the vortex misses you and our part of the country, too. I admire you for finishing the sampler.

  8. Well to tell you the truth I can't stitch at all. I thought it was pretty, but I know a project takes a lot longer when you are frustrated with it - still looked very nice.

  9. Good job on the stitchery and I really like the last one. We'll button up to the chin next week for sure! I'm glad your Mom liked the sampler and even though you didn't enjoy doing it, knowing she loved it has to make you glad you stuck it out! I wouldn't be caught on a lake ice fishing. Too cold and I'm not that fond of fish! Ha! Anyway, enjoy your weekend!

  10. Great finishes Janice! Bummer about the pattern but I think you improvised wonderfully. And that PS piece is so very sweet. There's a lot of stitches in those pieces. Wish I were so productive. Ice fishing is a huge thing around here. They not only walk, fish, snowmobile, and drive on the lakes, but build semi-permanent structures on the ice. I don't have a lot of fear of the ice breaking (hey, it's Nod)...but don't like being that cold LOL. I know, I know...some of the shanties are warm as toast...but, I'll leave that to them. We have extreme cold coming in tomorrow and are under a severe winter advisory. Our high temps will only be in negative digits and that isn't even in factoring in the wind chill. Not a good time for my furnace to be on the fritz. ~Robin~

  11. Both of your samplers are just beautiful ! The first one looks like an antique ....looks very challenging to stich . I can see where the other one was more fun to work on !
Ice fishing doesn't sound fun to me either . Several of my friends husbands love to do that . I'd rather stay warm & cozy indoors !!!
Keep warm & cozy too !!!

  14. We have thick ice for the first time in a few years. The Bob houses are going on the ice by the dozens! I say good for them the winter is long and it is nice to have something to do with your friends.
