Monday Montage- Shades of the Season

February is the month of love.
The color combinations that I like for this month are:

RED ~ TURQUOISE ~ PINK

A prim heart tucked inside my antique shoofly.

One of my prim blue dry paint early cupboards in my kitchen.
Bob stenciled the wood love sign for me.
The heart box on the top shelf I made from plastic canvas...many moons ago.

A little grouping nestled on my burlap chair.

Prim hearts in an indigo granite bowl.
What do you think of these colors?

Friday Fun Facts

Its...Friday..Woohoo..and Bob and I are going shopping today!

Will post pics of what we get.

Until then, here are the facts for this week.

1. Just one in twenty babies are born on their expected due date.
My daughter was born on her due date. My son was a day early.
Did any any of you have their children on their expected due date?

2. When you are alive, your brain is pink. When you die it turns grey.
Is there anyone out there that can confirm this?

3. The ancient Greeks believed that redheads would turn into a vampire after they died.

4. It is believed that redheads will disappear in the next 50 years,
and only blondes and brunettes will be around.
Hmmm..I hope they really are not vampires...
that is a sad fact though  :-(

5.  If you press "!" ( quotation, explanation, quotation)
in the Yahoo.com Homepage, you can hear a woman saying
"Yahooooo"!!
Try it...

That's it for now.
Heigh Ho

Its off to SHOP I go...

The History of the Collar Box

Robin @ the Primitive Hutch wanted to know more about
the Collar Box from my Monday Montage.

I decided to do a post for everyone regarding the
history of these unique boxes.

Men's historical fashion albeit is not as familiar to most folks
as women's fashion of the last 1800's to early 1900's.
Clothing was hand made back then,
which included men's shirts, collars and cuffs.
Because clothing was hand made, that made it more expensive.

Men would wear undershirts to protect their dress shirts,
however the places that had the most body contact in a shirt
were at the collar and cuff.
Thus these were added to preserve a shirt in the places
that an undershirt did not protect.
It was much more cost efficient to purchase just a collar and a set of cuffs
then to purchase the entire shirt with them on.
Thus the need for the collar box.

By removing the collar and cuffs to wash the shirt,
made it possible to save on the expense of buying these items
because all you had to do was to purchase a new shirt
and re-button the collar and cuffs to the new shirt.

Collar Boxes were used to keep the collar and cuffs
from getting dirty when not being used.
These boxes were invented around the 1860's.

Once factories were able to mass produce clothing,
shirts were less expensive and more available.
Thus it was no longer necessary to separate
 the collar and cuffs anymore,
and by the 1930's these types of shirts were no longer made....
neither were the collar boxes.

We take so many things for granted nowadays.
Washing machines, dry cleaners...
these are just a few of the things
that our fore-fathers and fore-mothers
did not have.

Thank you for the comment Robin,
and I hope this answered your question.
If anyone else would like to know more about any of
the antiques I feature, just let me know.
I would be happy to tell you more about them.

Monday Montage

This weeks montage features men's items.
We actually have more men that come into our store than women,
therefore we try to find unusual items for them as well.

Early 1900 Collar Box

Inside of collar box.
I actually like this one.

1930's Shinola Shoe Shine Box with brushes and Wax

Antique Shoe Shine Chair

Jack Daniels Whiskey Box

This 2 sided sign would have been on a metal pole
Bob added this to the store Friday and it sold Saturday.

Humidor ~ Copper Lined

1930's White Horse Whiskey Bottle next to a Glass Decanter
The graphics on this paper label bottle are awesome.

Hope you enjoyed.

The Curry Comb

Although I was only seven years old when my grampa H passed on,
I have many good memories of him.
Here are a few.

He let me walk out into the pasture in the morning and evening
to round up the cows and I always rode the lead cow into the barn.

Grampa would carry me piggyback upstairs to bed in the farmhouse.

He loved mixing fresh cream with vinegar and dipping gramma's
 homemade bread into his concoction...yuk

Now, one of my most fondest memories is that of the curry comb.
For those of you that do not know what this is... here is a pic.

Curry combs are used to brush horses and Grampa H had
two strawberry roans on his dairy farm.

These roans were working horses; not for riding.

Grampa did curry comb the roans,
However he also had one for himself.
Yes, you heard me right.
Whichever grand kid was around at the time
had the pleasure of using the curry comb right on my grampa.

Grampa would sit in his big comfy chair after supper
and one of us would stand on a bench behind that chair,
and curry comb his back.

He loved getting his back scratched with that curry comb,
even telling us to do it harder...
and we enjoyed doing it!
Us cousins would even fight to to be able to do it,
that was how much we enjoyed it.

I do not remember what happened to that curry comb.
It was my sister who reminded me of it the other day.
She was only 2 when our grampa passed,
so for her to remember scratching his back,
it must have been memorable.

Does anyone else have a memory they would like to share
about one of their grandfathers?
I would love to hear some of your memories!

Friday Fun Facts

Just the Facts Ma'am

1. The Magic word Abracadabra was originally intended
for the specific purpose of curing hay fever.
Just wondering if the doctor also used his magic wand?
FYI- Cocaine was also used as a drug in the 1800's and it was
also part of the formula originally used in the soft drink Coca Cola.

2. The first couple to be shown in bed together on prime time tv were
Fred and Wilma Flinstone
Now they show just about anything on tv....

3. George Washington grew marijuana in his garden.
Wonder if he inhaled or not?

4. It snowed in the Sahara desert for 30 minutes on 2/18/1979
Those poor camels that like the heat.

5. In Hungary the groom drinks a toast to his
bride out of her wedding slipper.
Hopefully she washed her feet before putting it on. Pee-you if she did not.

That's it for another fine week of Friday Facts.
Have a great weekend everyone!
