Hello all my friends.
Strawberry season is upon us...
and I have two finishes,
both strawberry related.
First is Strawberry Faire.
I did change the flower on the upper right
to match the colors of hearts on the left.
The pattern called for the yellow...
which on my fabric was ghosted.
You can slightly see the yellow at the bottom...
in between the red motifs.
Then I finished Berry Pinkeep Tray.
I used all the called for floss except
for the flag bunting.
Here are both together,
which I stuffed with pieces of scrap fabric.
I so love the lumpy look of my lil pillows
stuffing them this way.
I purchased a yard of strawberry fabric
from a quilt shop that is about an hour away from me.
I stopped at it on our way back from Frankenmuth
that one weekend.
I knew I would be going in that direction
so got off the freeway to the town it is in...
and was glad they had this.
I did coffee stain it a bit, but do love it.
So back to this finished piece.
You may have noticed the year 1820.
At first I was not even going to add this year in.
Then I got to thinking and did some research.
I found out that in 1820,
commercial cultivation began for strawberries
in the state of New Jersey.
With the introduction of rail cars,
farmers would ship the berries by wagon
to the train, and the berries would be sent
from New Jersey to New York.
This resulted in New York becoming
a strawberry shipping mecca.
{I just love history}
In other news,
Don't forget to watch for the
Strawberry Moon
{full moon}
coming up on June 11th.
The name of this moon came from
the Algonquin tribe marking the time
to gather the wild strawberries...
not because of the color of the moon.
The town just to the South of me
is called Algonac, which was named
for the Algonquins which lived here
in our area of Michigan before
the settlers moved in.
Sunday Mikayla graduates,
Bob and I will be attending her ceremony.
Tundra's Grandpa Ed came over to see
him last night.
He is our friend who watches Tundra (our dog)
when we need him to.
He just came back from Florida.
He now lives down there 6 months
out of the year.
Tundra was so excited to see him again.
Other than yesterday when it rained,
we have been getting the affects of
the Canadian wildfires here.
Been a bit hazy those days.
Well hope everyone has a great weekend!
Friday Blessings To All!

I like history too and enjoyed this strawberry history. When I was in 8th grade, my Science teacher started a strawberry farm and hired a few of us to help with planting and weeding. He's since passed but the farm has grown and a few of his kids run it. I do love strawberries!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Mikayla!
My brother and I used to pick strawberries to help a farmer and we got paid for each quart we picked. But now can't recall how much per quart. Sweet pillows, are they bowl filler size or sofa pillow size?
ReplyDeleteLove seeing your finishes and I enjoyed the history too-I love history. still raining here and is to continue over the weekend.
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday
You have to be world's fastest stitcher and it's so very beautiful -- every piece. I love the strawberry pieces tremendously. Have a lovely weekend.
ReplyDeleteI love the subtle change you made to the flower on Strawberry Faire. It ties everything together.
ReplyDeleteLove your Strawberry pin keeps ! My son picked strawberries as a kid , was his first job . Thank you for the history of strawberries , never knew that ! Enjoy some Strawberry Short cake !!!
ReplyDeleteAll your pillows are lovely.
ReplyDeleteStrawberries from NJ, my home state. :)
Sweet finishes...and, yes, summer wouldn't be summer without strawberries, would it? One of my most vivid memories of childhood is waiting for the day that my mom, sister, and I would get up at the crack of dawn and go to pick flats and flats of strawberries. Then the next several days were spent making every and anything strawberry-ish. Oh how my father loved those berries! I swear he'd eat an entire flat that first day. One of my specialties in my undergrad degrees was the Algonquin.... We've had air quality warnings for weeks already from the Canadian wildfires. Sometimes I wonder if we will ever have a clear day this summer. When it isn't cloudy/overcast, the sun is hazed over by the smoke. :-(
ReplyDeleteI thought your strawberry pillow was just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteJust lovely! I adore fresh strawberries.
ReplyDeleteWe have had the haze from the fires also. Rain today so it washed it down for now.
Cathy
I love the strawberry pillow. Thank you for the history, I did not know that, and I like to learn to new things. :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy Strawberry Moon,
Carla
Sweet finishes.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Mikayla!
I haven’t noticed any effects from the Canadian fires in northern Ohio.
