Rye Baskets

Happy Tuesday everyone!
I had a wonderful long weekend.
Even had Monday off.
Spent some time cleaning the attic.
The other half cooking, laundry,
and working on my latest rug.
Below is a sneak peek.

For those who know me,
know I have a passion for early baskets.
Either splint ones or rye ones.

At the Holly show I found another early rye one,
so it had to come home with me.

Rye baskets were made from wild grass
wrapped in twine made from tobacco.

These coiled baskets can be dated back 12,000 years.
Youzers that's a long time.

It is thought that the German immigrants,
brought their craftsmanship for these baskets
first to Pennsylvania and then
into Southern Appalachia.

Made by hand, I cannot imagine
the time it took to make these beauties.

They were made for a purpose.
Whether to hold the fruits and vegetables
of their own labor,
or maybe the mistress of the home used these
for her sewing needfuls.

Whatever the reason,
I sure am glad to be able
 to own such treasures!

For a simple Autumn display,
I paired up my only two rye baskets
with some butter paddles, butter stamp,
a few wood spoons and some tiny gourds.

Loving the simplicity of this display.
My new one is on the bottom.

Our forefathers and foremothers
were incredible folks!

In other news,
We purchased a new couch on Saturday.
Our pillow was the deciding factor.
We chose the cream herringbone pattern
for the couch, and the blue for extra pillows.
It will arrive in 4 to 6 weeks...
and I for one cannot wait!
My son Matt said it was about time
I got rid of the that old loveseat.

My favorite colors are reds, whites and blues
of all shades.
My secondary colors are shades of
gold and wood.
Can wood be a color?
In my world of prim it can  :-)

What are your favorite colors or patterns?

Rye Basket Blessings To All!
Janice

  5. Hi Janice. Thank you for your kind comment on my forage into Halloween. For some reason I enjoy it and now it has become a yearly tradition (for awhile anyway). I took this chance to look back at some of your posts that I didn't see and I really love your prim pieces and all your decor. I used to do something similar, although I didn't have as nice a collection as you and probably more country. When we bought our victorian cottage, I thought I wanted to go strictly victorian. I wish I had kept everything that I had because I still find it so homey and pleasing..Happy Fall and thanks again for your visits..Judy

  6. Hi Janice,
Once again I LOVE what you collect and your new rye basket is just wonderful!!! I love the two of them together and would be so happy if I found another one, but so far just have one and treasure it!! I know you will love your new sofa and the colors are so pretty!! My favorite colors would have to be black, red, and dark mustard, with lots of wood and old blue!
Hope you have a great week!

    1. Thanks Bobbie! Yes they are getting harder to find..pretty much lots of prims are getting harder to find, and I am afraid they might be going away because of that. Younger folks collect so many different things now. From farmhouse to vintage to industrial. We see it in our store. Hardly any prims are sold now. Janice
