Ember Days

Have you heard of Ember Days?
It is said that whatever the weather on March 8th is ~
the same weather will be for the month of April.
March 10th forecasts the month of May,
while March 11th forecasts the month of June.

Ember Days are always the 1st Wednesday,
Friday and Saturday after the first Sunday of Lent.
(boy that was a mouthful)

Well today here in Michigan we were under
a high wind warning.
Although we did not lose power, my daughter did.
Hopefully this Ember day does not foretell the windy
weather it is forecasting for our weather here in April.
~ one never knows around here ~

My dad use to tell me that Ember days for his dad
meant farmers would gather together and help
each other to get their fields ready for crops.

For my dad, Ember Days meant
gathering up the many rocks that the frost
brought to the surface on Grampa H's farm.

Grampa H would drive the tractor with a wagon behind it.
My dad and his brothers would walk alongside and
pick up rocks along the way and put them in the wagon.

Once they were done walking the fields,
Grampa H would drive to a place under a tree.
He then would go get the backhoe,
and dig a big hole and bury all of the rocks.

The first time my dad heard that
Landscaping companies were charging for rocks...
he said if only he still had his dad's farm,
we would have been rich with all of the rocks
they buried each year.

Guess it was not meant to be.

All of the rocks in my pictures today,
were purchased at you guessed it ~
a Landscape company.

Wish I had access to my grandfather's farm now too.

What was your weather today?
Try to remember what it was and see if you have
the same weather in April,
then in May and June.

Ember Day Blessings To All!

  4. I am so lucky that my son and dil have a place in the country that is full of rocks. My neighbors here in town say that I have a rock fetish. For Mothers Day and Birthdays I always ask for a bucket of rocks.
