Ring Tail Pheasant

Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.
We had a chill in the air all weekend...
thus the furnace did get turned on.
Plus last night we had our first freeze.

Last week driving home I was privy
to a sight I have not seen in a long while.
There were two female pheasants
on the side of the road.

It has been over 10 years since I had
a glimpse of a male pheasant...
and over 30 years since seeing a female one.

As a teen and young adult,
my dad enjoyed pheasant hunting
and always brought many home to eat.
Without a bird dog.

That was a time where they were very plentiful.

So much land has been cleared for subdivisions
that the poor animals including the pheasants
have disappeared.

What a shame it is.
Even as a kid I loved hearing
both the pheasant call and that of the bobwhite.

Needless to say I have heard neither since a teen.

There are a few farms that breed pheasants
here in Michigan and release them
to be hunted for those willing to pay the price.

I so enjoyed creating this display
as pheasants do like a ripe apple in their diet.
I added this feather boa just for fun!

Bob created this Primitive sign for me eons ago.

Do you have pheasants or even bobwhites
in your neck of the woods?

Pheasant Blessings To All!
Janice

    1. Glad to here pheasants and partridges are in your area. A bobwhite has a whistle that sounds like bob white and they are smaller than a partridge. Janice

  2. There are pheasants left in eastern Iowa, but not nearly as many as I recall from my younger days. Too many hay fields and pastures plowed up for corn & beans over the years. And too many years of weather that trashed the nesting season. At least pheasants have hunters looking out for them, it's the native song birds I really miss and worry about. It's been a long time since I could reliably count on hearing meadow larks in summer.

  3. We have pheasants but I haven't seen too many lately as we do have foxes in the area. They are such a beautiful bird, I could never hunt and shoot such a beautiful bird...

While I was recuperating from chemo I had a female pheasant that came all winter, feeding on my deck every day. It got to be so tame that it would not run away when I came out to feed it but one day she disappeared and I think it must have fallen pray to a fox.

    1. Yes one of our vendors brought in a Chinese pheasant that was mounted from a taxidermist and that one was even colorful! Janice

  5. Janice, I love your stuffed Pheasant. They are quite handsome with all of their colors and I have always admired them too. We don't have Pheasants down here but last year I found a sweater and long sleeve shirt with Pheasants embroidered on them. That set came home with me to enjoy wearing in cooler days . We do have Bob Whites and I love the vintage pattern Furnivals Quail. I was gifted a mild pitcher in the blue pattern. They also offer a brown pattern as well. Both are pretty. Have you seen it before?

  9. Your display is oh-so-perfect for the season. The sign is gorgeous! I love the little dress! Bob Whites have made a bit of come back here the last few years. Their call on a summer day is one simple pleasure I so enjoy.

  10. I remember my Dad hunting for pheasant and having it once for dinner. I haven't seen any around here but we did have 3 big turkeys walk through the yard on their way to our woods! Your sign and display are beautiful!

  11. Thank you Kathy! The pheasants seem to be disappearing. I saw a small flock of turkeys yesterday coming home from work in a place I have never seen turkeys before, so not sure why they were there now. Janice

  12. Hi Janice. I have caught a glimpse of a male pheasant a long time ago in a field but that is about it. We don't have bobwhites around here either that I know of. It seems all the good stuff happens in your neck of the country. We have a lot of birds and animals but they just seem to be the ordinary ones. Your vignette is so pretty. Is that bird one that your dad caught? Their colors are so gorgeous..Thanks for your visits and I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner. I am so far behind since the power went out and am trying to catch up. We had the same thought about PG&E trying to make money. I know there is a huge lawsuit against them for the Paradise fire. I am all for taking care of the environment and would not mind at all if our power was out for a good reason, but plans need to be better for future times..Happy Thursday..xxJudy

    1. Thank you Judy. Was wondering if you got your power back. Such a shame that a company like that can do what they like to customers. Our power only goes out with a bad storm and we have been lucky these past few years. Knock on wood. Hopefully something will happen in your neck of the woods where they cannot do that. Janice
