May CupboardScape

Hope everyone is doing well.
I have come to the conclusion that we
here in Michigan we are having a true Spring.
Something we have not been use to for many years.
Therefore we are complaining it is too cold,
rainy and warm and then repeat.
We have been spoiled with warm weather
these past years...which is not really Spring.
I had this same conversation with one of my neighbors,
and she agreed with me.

Spring spending time on my grandparents farms,
meant Spring cleaning.
Both my gramma's would get out the
lye soap for scrubbing.
{pictured here is some faux violets that I made}
Since they are blooming currently...
decided to add them inside the apothecary jar
with some lye soap.

Gramma H would get out her Argo and starch
her clothes after washing.
Gramma B used P & G Soap.
Both used Ivory soap as well.

Lye soap was a necessity.

Pioneer woman used mangles for scrubbing.
My grammas had their wringer washing machines.

However both grammas would
beat their pillows outside.

Gramma B would also use her washing dolly.
This is not hers, but I bought one.
You would place this wooden dolly
inside a bucket and twist in the soapy water.

I actually did like beating the rugs with
a rug beater.
Both gramma's would hang their rugs
over a clothesline and I would
beat the dust out of them.
This rag rug actually was my gramma B's.
I remember tearing strips of cloth
and putting the colors in different piles.
Then my gramma would take the rags
to a house which a lady would make
the rugs for her and in turn gramma
would sew or mend clothes for her.
It was their barter system.

In other news,
my brother and I went back to my mom's house
Monday morning.
Grabbed more things we wanted to bring back.
Then we went to visit my mom.
She had not eaten any of her lunch
when we arrived.
She lied and told us she did...so we made her eat.
She then ate everything except her hamburger.
She needs to eat more protein...but she wont listen.
My sister calls her while we were still there.
She tells my sister she had tuna for lunch.
I texted my sister and told her what she really ate.

Today I have to take her to 2 doctor appts,
then taking her to lunch and then taking her
to her ice cream float social.
I will be bringing a gallon of vanilla ice cream.
I know my mom will have one of those...
she wont say no to sweets.

Tomorrow Bob and I will be going to
the rock quarry near us.
I want to create a new flower bed with
rocks around it.
We also have to get a few flowers for the house,
and need to get flowers for the flower pots
we have at the entrance to our store.

No rain in the forecast now so we will finally
have some nice weather
to get out and clean flowers beds...
not today though.

Hope everyone is having a great week thus far.

End Of May Blessings To All!
Janice

  1. I agree on our Spring this year.
We are really spoiled in the way we do laundry now. It used to be a lot more work.
Hope all goes well with your mom today.

  3. I remember we had a wringer washer as a child. I'd sit out on the porch with her and watch and she would always tell me to watch my fingers but I was a curious child so one day I put my finger in the roller. It's one of those, " what was I thinking?" I was 5. Boy did that hurt. I never did THAT again.
We go back and forth with cooler spring temps and summer. This week we're in spring with 70/80 but next week is supposed to be summer.

  4. Fun post! I’m sure the younger generation has no idea what the expression “tit in the wringer” means 🤣🤣🤣
Best of luck with mom issues. It is not easy but something you will never regret 🥰

  5. I am so excited see your new garden space with the rocks you find. How fun.
I have rock borders on several of my garden areas too. All the rocks are from our family farm. I would bring some home each visit for the past 25 years. ;-)
    Have a great new week!

  7. Whew! We are blessed in today’s world with all Our gadgets to clean with! It may have made some of us a tad lazy. I don’t think we realize how good we have it. Lol

  9. I enjoy reading about all those devices, but I am sure glad we have modern machines these days. I think that is a good idea about protein drinks and there is yogurt too with a lot of protein.

  10. A new garden bed edging is a lot of work. I’m sure it will be beautiful. Maybe your mom likes the softer foods that you don’t have to chew much. Crumbled burger with veggie sauce might work.

  11. It sounds like you've been having the same weather that we have had here in western PA, Janice! So... much... rain!! Finally, the rain stopped this morning and it looks like we'll have some sun for the next few days. We've done nothing to our flower beds at all. It was fun reading about the laundry process in days gone by--so glad we don't have to deal with that now! Your mom sounds like mine did... She just picked at her food, but still enjoyed her sweets :) She did at least drink a Boost every day that helped somewhat, but she was down to just 74 pounds when she passed in 2020. Good luck!

  12. Wisconsin has had a weird spring - at least where I live. As I type this, we are under a severe thunderstom warning - we just had some hail. My husband just planted his tomatoes outside...I love laundry antiques! How special to have one of your grandma's rugs. You are a good daughter!

  13. I have a thing for barn stones, but any good looking stone will do. After many smashed fingers, I wised up and follow a safer method now. Have fun hunting!

  14. Your laundry collectibles are very familiar. I have the scrub boards, lye, Argo, etc. all in my laundry room. And I well remember the wringer washer. We had one on our back porch that was used regularly during the months that the water wouldn't freeze. When it was freezing, we'd pack everything up and go to the laundromat. It was always a lot of work no matter which way it was done given the amount of laundry living on a farm generated. And the rag rugs are a fond memory too. My great aunt made them and had a little shed out behind the house where she made them. I always loved stopping there. Crazy weather here. I checked the weather before leaving for town today. It said a negligible chance of rain (6%)...but coming home I got caught in an awful storm....thunder, lightning, torrential rains and hail. I will have to make sure that there wasn't any damage to my truck tomorrow.

  15. You've been a busy lady. Interesting about the washing tools. I've only seen them in antique stores. But I do use lye soap. I make a big batch about once a year. It's the only soap I use.

  16. Hi Janice. The new flower bed with rocks sounds great. I will look forward to the pictures. Earlene said it would be fun to meet up with you guys sometime. I would love it too. We will look forward to doing that sometime. Have a great day. I am off to the garden centre this morning for some plants to fill my tubs.
